The film starts with loud eerie music which is non-diegetic so only the audience can hear it. While the music is playing the title ' lights out' fades in slowly which has an effect on the audience as this puts them on edge. The title is simple but effective as behind the words it looks like there is a light on which will make the audience wonder why its called lights out. When the music begins to fade out so does the title and it then cuts to the first scene which is set in an office. A conversation is going on between the manager and one of his employees and medium shots are used which shows the characters outfits and some of the office. The camera then cuts to a long shot of the woman who was in the office in the first scene in a dark room holding a clipboard. This is effective as the audience are wondering what she is doing and why is it so dark even though there is a few lights on. During this scene it is quite with no sound at all which makes the audience think that something or someone is going to jump out. But instead of that happening the lights suddenly go off leaving the room pitch black.
Luckily there is an emergency power switch to turn the lights back on which the lady uses. But when she turns back round the rack of clothes are moving by themselves which makes the audience wonder if someone is there but the lady doesn't know. The camera then cuts to a close up of the woman's face which show her facial expressions which are scared and confused as she thinks she is alone. There is then more non-diegetic music which begins to play quietly and a long shot is used to show the lady walks down the corridor and the audience can only see her shadow. The camera then cuts to a long shot of a room with a clothing stand in and the lady walks in to turn of the lights when she turns them off she spots a figure standing in the doorway which she then gasps at. This is effective as the audience are now interested in the film as they want to find out more of the story. A close up is then used to show the lady's facial expressions which are scared and shocked. She then turn the lights back on and the camera cuts back to a long shot of the room and the figure is no longer there. The lady turns them back off and the figure is yet again standing there which is starting to scare the audience and the lady in the film. The lady turns the lights on and off three more times but the last time loud noise is made and the figure is staring at the lady which is when she decides to leave the room.
The camera cuts to the next scene which is back in the office and the lady comes rushing in saying to John "I saw something in the back room and it kept disappearing". He doesn't seemed to be concerned as he is on the phone. This is effective as the audience are now interested in weather the lady was seeing things or that the figure was real. Afterwards the man goes into the dark room where the first scene was and he see the same strange figure the woman saw but she is no laying down on the floor. The man calls her name "Esther". She hears him and begins to stand up slowly the lights suddenly go off. John then waves his hands in front of the lights to turn the back on and when they turn on Esther is standing up behind him which he doesn't know about. Eerie music begins to play when John turns around and spots her. As he is looking around he looks back to the spot he originally saw her at and she has gone. This is effective as the audience now have a rough idea who the figure is and that John knows her as he begins to run trying to find her. When John is running he falls over and hurts his leg but gets up and Esther is behind him. She begins to move closer to him but he slowly is moving back. Esther is making strange noises which is diegetic sound as everyone can hear it. John decides to run into a run for safety and picks up a baseball bat to protect himself with. But the audience knows that this won't help him as this normally happens in a horror film. After John picked up the bat the lights outside the room go off and slowly the ones in the room he is in go off. A close up is then used to show the door handle moving which means someone is trying to get in and the audience knows that it's Esther. The door slowly opens but no one enters and then the camera cuts to a medium shot of John who suddenly gets dragged away by someone who is unknown.
