The film begins with creepy non-diegetic music which is sound that only the audience can hear which makes the audience question if something scary is going to happen right at the start of the film or that it's just for effect. When the titles are on screen to the right is a red background with a little boy standing at the end of a black cross which tells the audience that a little boy may be one of the main characters. There is also some strange non-diegetic music playing which sounds like you would hear it in a church which relates to the little boy and the cross.
After the titles one of the main characters is shown driving their car and he looks stressed out.The atmosphere created is dark and depressing as it's raining outside. This makes the audience wonder where is he going? and why does he look stressed?
The sound used in this scene is cars beeping their horns, rain and then it falls silent except for the radio which is on quietly but then a creepy voice is heard which says "the child is dead". This makes the audience become suspicious to what is happening and if the character knows the child, who is the child and what happened to them and why is a strange voice telling him.
The next scene the man gets out of his car and into a church and from this scene the audience finds out that the mans baby has died. In the church there are nuns present and one of the stereotypes of a horror is not to trust nuns as they can be friendly one moment and can change to being cruel. As the mans baby has died he decided it would be the best thing to do is lie to his wife and tell her the baby is fine as another baby was born at the same time but the mother sadly passed away during child birth. The audience probably have many questions as to why the child is an important character in the film as it is a stereotype in a horror film that with a baby or a child involved a problem always comes along at some point in the film.
