The Purge opening scene analysis

I was unable to find a clip of the opening scene but I have watched the film before.

The film begins diegetic sound is used as the character in the film has put on their own music. There is a man sitting on a chair with a mask on while he watches two people suffer as they are getting tortured. They have gags on so they can't talk so this shows that they have done something wrong or that the man in the mask enjoys doing this to innocent people. The audience are wondering who is the masked man and why is he watching two people get tortured. They may also be thinking that he is the main character as a wide range of close ups are used on him which shows he is an important character in the film. The audience may also be wondering if he ha done this to anyone else and if so will he continue. In this scene we find out a twelve hour purge is happening and this is why the two people are being tortured and that the man in the mask is in charge of something and that he has a lot of power.
